Roque Nublo
The Roque Nublo is a challenging hike that won’t be for everyone, but the sky-high views are worth the effort for those keen to get the heart pumping. Known by the locals as the ‘Pillar of Heaven’, this volcanic rock is ideal for the budding explorers out there. At about 80 metres tall, it is one of the largest freestanding rocks in the world.
Puerto Rico Beach
Known by the locals as the sunniest spot on the island (which is quite an accomplishment), Puerto Rico’s specially constructed resort plays hosts to the best beach in Gran Canaria. With golf courses, a nearby public pool and lush tropical gardens within walking distance, this spot is surrounded by activities for the whole family.
The Las Palmas Carnival
If you want to capture the true spirit of Spain, then the Las Palmas Carnival is for you. Nowhere else will you find perfect weather and a 6-kilometre parade that crosses through the beaches. Held every year in February, the Cabalgata (the main event) is viewed by over 200, 000 people. As one of the largest festivals in Spain, the only thing the carnival asks you to do is ‘live and let live’.

Gran Canaria offers a collection of tasty specialities. Typically using the freshest fish and meat, the classic paella here is a great way to enjoy original Spanish food. For a taste of the local cuisine, the island offers Carajacas (spiced liver cooked in a clay pot), Sancocho (a dry fish stew with sweet potatoes) or the famous Ropa Vieja (shredded chicken or beef with chickpeas, potatoes and fresh garlic). And to drink, the island serves up Tinto del Monte wine (Mountain Red) and the locally brewed beer Tropical.
