June marks the start of the summer season in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, when the skies are blue, the sun is shining and rainfall almost guaranteed not to appear. At this time of year, the average temperature is 22°C, created by average highs of 25°C during the daytime and average lows of 19°C after dark.
Across the month, the daily average temperatures gradually increase, starting at 22°C during the first ten days and jumping up to 23°C after. During the final week of the month, temperatures fluctuate between 23°C and 24°C, before ending at 24°C on June 30th. This makes the final week of June the warmest time to visit Gran Canaria.
The highest temperature ever recorded in Gran Canaria in June is 36.9°C, which was registered at Gran Canaria Airport on June 2nd in 2010. The lowest temperature ever registered on the island during this month is 12°C, which was recorded on June 21st 1970.
Although calimas can occur at any time of year in Gran Canaria, they’re at their worst during the summer months – such as June – when they can push temperatures 10°C above average highs. A calima is a weather condition caused by trade winds, which normally blow in a north easterly direction across the Canary Islands, blowing in from the east across the Sahara Desert. When there’s a calima, visibility is low due to the high percentage of dust and sand particles in the air and temperatures are high due to the winds having come directly from the west coast of Africa. Calimas can last anywhere between one day and a fortnight and your best bet of staying cool and comfortable is to stick to the coasts of the island, where the negative effects are lessened. Thankfully, this is where you’ll find most tourist resorts.
Between June 27th and June 28th across in 2013, AEMET – the Canary Islands’ MET office – issued a yellow alert for high temperatures of up to 34°C caused by a calima across the south, west and east of the island. The exact same alert for the same high temperatures was also issued the previous year, between June 22nd and June 24th in 2012.
On June 19th 2011, AMET issued a yellow alert for high temperatures of up to 34°C caused by a calima. This was upgraded to an orange alert by June 20th, when temperatures peaked at 38°C.
During June, the likelihood of precipitation occurring drops as the month develops, starting off at 12% on June 1st and falling down to 8% by June 30th. At this time of year, the island receives an average of 0mm of rainfall! If you are very unlucky and do get some sort of precipitation during your June holiday in Gran Canaria, it will most likely be drizzle (which occurs on 59% of days with rainfall), moderate rain (21%) or light rain (16%).
The highest monthly precipitation ever recorded in Gran Canaria in June is 9.8mm, which was registered at Gran Canaria Airport during June 1955. The first day of this month was the wettest June day ever, when 9.7mm of rainfall was recorded on a single day. However, June 1963 saw the highest number of rainy days a June has ever known – seven.
Across June, Gran Canaria enjoys an average of nine hours of daily sunshine, along with median cloud coverage which drops as the month progresses. The median cloud coverage starts off at 39% (mostly clear) on June 1st and drops down to 32% (mostly clear) by June 30th. On an average day, the sky is clear/mostly clear 55% of the time, partly cloudy 25% and mostly cloudy/overcast 14%.
The average sea temperature for the waters around Gran Canaria is mild throughout the year. In June, the sea is 21°C, which is definitely warm enough for swimming in – despite being 1°C-2°C cooler than in the months between July and November.
The relative humidity for Gran Canaria in June averages at around 66%, ranging between 54% (mildly humid) and 84% (humid) across the month, rarely falling below 43% (comfortable) or reaching as high as 100% (very humid). The air is driest around June 30th, when the relative humidity falls below 60% (mildly humid) three days out of four, whilst it’s at its most humid around June 3rd, when it rises above 74% (humid) three days out of four.
Over the course of an average June, wind speeds vary between 5m/s (gentle breeze) and 13m/s (strong breeze), rarely going above 15 m/s (high wind). The highest average wind speed of 10 m/s (fresh breeze) happens around June 30th, when the average daily maximum is 13 m/s (strong breeze). The lowest average wind speed of 8 m/s (fresh breeze) occurs around June 1st, when the average daily maximum wind speed is 12 m/s (strong breeze).
Although Gran Canaria isn’t known as one of the windiest Canary Islands, the gusts can get strong. Between June 11th and 12th in 2012, AEMET issue a yellow alert for all the Canaries – Gran Canaria included – for strong winds with gusts of up to 24 m/s inland and big waves around the southern, eastern and western coasts of Gran Canaria.
