The Great Rest was discovered many dozens of years ago. It came about in the middle of the 19th century, when English travelers en route to Cape Town happened on the island with the best Winters in Europe, almost by accident.
An island with perfect microclimates for long-term stays and clearing up ailments, aches and pains, or simply resting. A place with an ocean of fine weather, a place to look after yourself and feel good.
By the second half of the 19th century Gran Canaria had become an important health resort. Visitors came in from a thousand cities, in search of a good climate and the medicinal waters or the grand spas at Azuaje and Berrazales.
But the Great Rest also kept pace with change over the years. Visionary Eduardo Filiputti brought the formula up to date last century, creating a wellness centre in Maspalomas, a spa on dunes with a heliotherapy centre to take advantage of the benefits of the sand and the sun. This was back in the 1960s.
