Perhaps the most famous feature of Maspalomas is the extensive area of sand dunes that lies down by the seafront. A whole eight kilometres of fine, white sand offers some great spots for sunbathing, as well as being a popular attraction for hikers and bird watchers. You can even take a camelback tour around the dunes, which will be a memorable experience of any holiday to Maspalomas.
Maspalomas enjoys a warm Atlantic climate all year round, and not surprisingly it is a popular spot for a wide variety of water sports. Windsurfing and jet skiing are particularly popular pastimes here, while the crystal clear waters provide the perfect conditions for snorkelling and scuba diving.
The beaches themselves can often get busy, particularly during the peak months of July and August. It is always easy to escape the crowds on a holiday in Maspalomas however, as few holidaymakers bother to explore too far down the coastline. The beach is divided into four main areas – one of which is perfectly suited to families and children. As several of these areas are popular with nudists however, it is always worth checking a map before you head out! At the far end of the beautiful beach you’ll find one of the area’s more famous landmarks, the lighthouse known as El Faro de Maspalomas.
Head into the resort itself on the other hand, to experience a lively tourist centre filled with shopping centres, taverns, bars and restaurants. The local cuisine is particularly good, with a large focus on freshly caught fish. On some days you will also have the chance to visit a market, with stalls selling a wide range of local produce, handicrafts and souvenirs.
